Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health is pleased to spotlight Heather Appelbaum, M.D., FACOG, Division Chief of Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, with outpatient appointments available in Oakhurst, NJ.
Dr. Appelbaum is board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, with a special focus practice designation from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. Her expertise is in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery for ovarian cysts and endometriosis in children and in pelvic reconstructive surgery for birth defects of the reproductive system and genital trauma. With over 25 years of experience, she is dedicated to caring for young girls, teens, and women of all ages.
Dr. Appelbaum believes that creating a positive healing environment is essential for young girls as they navigate their reproductive health. By focusing on each child’s unique gynecologic condition, she tailors treatment plans to meet their individual needs, while also providing special attention to each stage of reproductive development and considering how their condition may impact future sexual and fertility functions.

I enthusiastically show compassion for girls and women of all ages and all stages by making the first experience with the gynecologist as comfortable as possible. My patients and their caregivers appreciate the balance of clinical confidence with professionalism and warmth that I provide to each individual patient.
- What is the #1 tip you always share with patient families?
Having a positive body image promotes self-confidence, self advocacy, and safety. The goal of a pediatric gynecologist is to promote this in the context of problem focused care with the emphasis on healthy future fertility and sexual functioning.
- How do you spend time with your friends and family for fun?
We are a very fun family. We love to laugh, tell jokes, go to the beach, take walks, and travel across the country!
